Cube wins planning permission for new Thames river pier

Cube Real Estate has been granted planning permission for a new river pier on the Thames next to one of its major properties.

The pier would be constructed on the south bank of the river between Wandsworth Bridge and Battersea railway bridge adjacent to Plantation Wharf which comprises 180,000 sq ft of offices and more than 200 homes. Cube bought the property for its Picasso Fund in 2005 and implemented an active management programme designed to maximise the investment's income and future potential.

Proposals for the pier provide for a publicly supported passenger landing pier with pontoons housing nine private residential moorings and two leisure craft moorings.

Cube Real Estate Director, Jonathan Lawes, commented: "The new pier will make a fantastic contribution to transport on the Thames and will also further enhance the environment and connectivity of Plantation Wharf where we have planning consent to create a further 44 apartments".

Riverboat operator Thames Clippers recently expanded its operation to St George Wharf in Vauxhall and has plans to further extend the commuter service as far as Putney.

Jonathan Lawes added: "The increasing use of the Thames to move around London has been one of the capital's great transport successes of recent times. This summer's Olympics will highlight what a vital part the river can play in London's transport infrastructure. Having piers in strategic locations is essential in promoting travel on the river so the new pier is being welcomed by everyone who wants the Thames to be utilised more".

Cube canvassed local residents and businesses about the proposals and received an unprecedented 95% support for the enhancements.

Wandsworth Council's planning committee chairman, Councillor Nick Cuff, commented: "A new public passenger landing pier will offer an alternative mode of transport for local people and tourists, play a part in alleviating overcrowding on nearby bus routes and boost the local economy".
